The operation of fluorescent bulbs is based on the understanding of how atoms behave when they’re energized. This fundamental knowledge is used in all sorts of light bulbs. An atom comprises a nucleus and electrons. The electrons orbit the nucleus in different energy levels. When an atom is stimulated due to heat (in case of incandescent bulbs) or some other technique, the electrons jump to a higher energy level, further away from the nucleus.
The newly acquired energy from the electrode makes it unstable, and it releases this acquired energy in form of light photons. The photons may be of different colors based upon the energy discharged. At a fluorescent bulbs, you will find two electrodes in the glass enclosure. The electrodes are attached to an AC current circuit. A small amount of mercury is also placed in the glass bulb, aside from an inert gas at low pressure.
When a current is passed through the electrodes and it’s warmed up, the excited electrodes move in the glass enclosure and some of them collide with mercury traces. |} The mercury becomes gaseous, and a few of the charged atoms or electrons collide with the gaseous mercury and eventually become further billed. The highly charged electrons, which are also highly unstable, discharge the photons.
The majority of the light energy released is in the form of ultraviolet rays, which are invisible to human eyes. |} The phosphorus that’s coated on the inside of the bulb beams to produce visible light once the ultraviolet rays fall. Various combinations of photon coatings produce lights of different colors. Fluorescent bulbs are more efficient than normal incandescent bulbs.
They produce more light for the same present as incandescent lamps. Thus, with lower currents, they generate a similar intensity of light as incandescent bulbs and are energy-efficient. They could offer a variety of color ranges unavailable in other bulbs. Since they’re not affected by vibration, fluorescent bulbs may also be safely used as enthusiast bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs don’t become blistering hot and may be used in places where fire safety is a concern.
