The operation of fluorescent bulbs is based on the understanding of how atoms behave when they are energized. This fundamental knowledge is employed in all sorts of light bulbs. The electrons orbit the nucleus in various energy levels. When an atom is excited either because of heat (in case of incandescent bulbs) or some other procedure, the electrons jump to a higher energy level, further away from the nucleus.
The newly acquired energy in the electrode makes it unstable, and it emits this obtained energy in form of light photons. The photons might be of various colors based upon the energy discharged. In a fluorescent bulb, there are two electrodes inside the glass enclosure. The electrodes are attached to an AC current circuit. When a current is passed through the electrodes and it’s warmed up, the enthusiastic electrodes proceed in the glass enclosure and a number of them collide with mercury traces. |} The mercury gets gaseous, and some of the charged atoms or electrons collide with the gaseous mercury and become further charged. The highly charged electrons, which can also be highly unstable, discharge the photons.
Most of the light energy released is in the form of ultraviolet rays, which are invisible to human eyes. |} The phosphorus that’s coated on the interior of the bulb beams to produce visible light when the ultraviolet rays fall on them. Different mixtures of photon coatings produce lights of different colors. Fluorescent bulbs are more effective than normal incandescent bulbs.
They produce more light for the same present as incandescent lamps. They can provide a variety of colour ranges unavailable in other light bulbs. As they are not affected by vibration, fluorescent bulbs can also be safely used as fan bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs don’t become blistering hot and can be used in places where fire safety is an issue.
