The performance of fluorescent bulbs is based on the knowledge of the way electrons behave when they are energized. This basic knowledge is used in all sorts of light bulbs. The electrons orbit the nucleus in various energy levels. When an atom is excited either due to heat (in the event of incandescent bulbs) or some other procedure, the electrons jump to a higher energy level, farther away from the nucleus.

Most of the light energy released is in the form of ultraviolet rays, which can be invisible to human eyes. |} The phosphorus that’s coated on the inside of the bulb glows to create visible light once the ultraviolet rays fall. Various mixtures of photon coatings create lights of different colours. Fluorescent bulbs are more effective than ordinary incandescent bulbs.
They create more light for the same current as incandescent lamps. Thus, with reduced currents, they generate a similar intensity of light as incandescent bulbs and are energy-efficient. They can provide many different colour ranges obtainable in other light bulbs. As they are not affected by vibration, fluorescent bulbs may also be safely used as fan bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs do not become blistering hot and may be used in places where fire safety is a concern.
